NEXT OPEN DAY
The unique, advanced Seven Oaks curriculum was developed by The Holistic Education Trust to empower children in a fast-changing world. Adapting to the massive changes our planet is undergoing requires deep self-awareness, and research shows that solutions to the numerous environmental issues we face requires higher levels of thinking than the standard school curriculum provides.
In addition to the standard academic, art and science subjects provided by other schools, Seven Oaks provides three new curriculum areas:
Building Brilliance® is our unique personal empowerment curriculum. Seven Oaks students learn to recognise, grow and utilise the powerful, creative brilliance that is built into us all, but which usually remains as untapped potential throughout our lives. Read more.
Socio-literacy This strand of the curriculum is all about developing our relationships with others. Students learn to understand and work co-operatively with others in preference to competing destructively. They get to consider the kind of society they’d like to live in, and learn practical ways of creating that via active participation in a wide variety of class and school matters. The school and classrooms are mini societies where students learn from the conflicts they have with each other, from working together on team projects, from issues that arise in the school, as well as observing and reflecting on the actions of adults in the global community.
Eco-literacy Our students become conscious of the cycles, flows and interconnections of nature in balance, and experience them personally through meaningful activities such as gardening, food preparation and caring for animals. This strong connection with the fundamentals of life itself is likely to be the single most critical skill to have in the emerging economy.
Seven Oaks' powerful and contemporary curriculum also ensures its students excel in:
Academic proficiency This has been the primary goal of education in New Zealand for 130 years. Literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (maths) are important in the Seven Oaks curriculum, as they are in other schools. We ensure that the 3R’s is a positive learning experience by personalising it to each student and reinforcing it through application in real-life activities and projects that are meaningful to each child.
Arts Music, arts, and craft activities are very important avenues of self-development and expression. They are always encouraged and regularly engaged in by all Seven Oaks students.
Sport/PE Exercise is crucial to the physical, emotional and mental development of children. Our rich, natural environment allows children to open and engage all of their senses, including visual, audial, tactile and intuitive. Classroom play, organised daily, has an emphasis on enjoying physical exercise, as well as developing agility, co-ordination and strength.
Science Our science activities are inspired by the deep understandings gained in eco-literacy.
IT Computers are available in all classrooms and used where appropriate for learning purposes. Usage naturally increases as students progress in their abilities to research information and to create and publish their own work.
